You hear us talk a lot about voting with your dollar, conscious consumerism, and how to make your money go further. One of the ways your support impacts the planet is through projects such as Co+op Forest.
Since 2012, the Co+op Forest has been thriving under the stewardship of a carbon offset program funded by National Co+op Grocers (NCG), the organization that supports food co+ops, in partnership with PUR Project.
NCG believes that environmentally responsible businesses like ours have an important leadership role in addressing climate change. As of 2021, Co+op Forest includes an estimated 1.8 million trees which will offset at least 7,052 metric tons of CO2e within their lifetimes, while also providing income and environmental benefits to the surrounding community.
Thanks to the fair trade and organic farmer cooperatives funded in Peru, Co+op Forest will continue to slow climate change through the regenerative agricultural practices it incubated for local farmers, such as agroforestry and intercropping. The forest will also provide much-needed retirement income as mature trees are harvested and sold.
