We Need Your Support to Help Deep Roots Thrive in 2025!
Happy New Year from Deep Roots' Board & Staff!
As we enter the new year, we celebrate the many reasons Deep Roots Market is a cherished resource in Greensboro! As a small, cooperatively-owned business, we need your support to help Deep Roots continue to grow and thrive in 2025. In addition to choosing to shop the co-op regularly as your grocery market, we are seeking support in the form of donations. Will you consider making a contribution at a level that is meaningful for you?
Why is Deep Roots important to our community and worthy of your support?
- Deep Roots Market, the only cooperatively owned grocery in Greensboro, is valued as a small neighborhood market at the gateway to downtown, providing healthy, local, organic, and fair-trade food and goods.
- So what's important about local? Not only is the cooperative fully owned by local residents as opposed to a corporate conglomerate, but it is also a vital link between local and regenerative farmers, health-focused small businesses, and you the consumer. That means more of your dollars stay in the community, and locally grown foods have higher nutrient density and reduced carbon footprint. Each month the co-op purchases on average around $64,000 in products from local farmers and producers within our state!
- Many people tell us they enjoy shopping at Deep Roots because the atmosphere is welcoming and the staff are happy, friendly, and helpful. We employ nearly 50 staff members who are dedicated to the co-op as exemplifying values and practices they believe in. Staff are paid a living wage and they model equity and justice in the workplace and our community.
- Did you know products are vetted at Deep Roots? You will not find products containing artificial colors/flavors, high fructose corn syrup, parabens, hydrogenated oils, antibiotics in meat or dairy products...the list goes on.
- We employ environmentally sustainable practices such as offering bulk foods, minimizing packaging and plastics waste, we offer glass recycling and composting for customers on-site, and more.
We are proud that we have successfully weathered some challenging storms in recent years, beginning with upfitting and moving into our current location, cost overruns, the pandemic, and even a truck crashing into the front of our store!
Most recently, so much change took place in 2024. We hired a new General Manager, Matt Davis, who is absolutely dedicated to seeing Deep Roots recommit to issues that have been put on the shelf since the pandemic, and deeply committed to leading Deep Roots to continue to grow and thrive. The new management team, coinciding with a new point-of-sale system, were first steps in that journey. The management team and all-volunteer Board of Directors are committed to refocusing attention on what has been neglected and envisioning needs for the future including to:
- prioritize accelerated payback of outstanding owner loans that were made to see Deep Roots through times of growth and change,
- replace aging or broken equipment,
- introduce solar energy,
- expand educational opportunities, and
- remodel the store to meet the future needs of the community and our over 7,000 owners.
The word community holds a special place at Deep Roots, from contributing to a vibrant local economy and supporting local farmers and producers, to promoting equality, dignity, and fairness. Deep Roots Market is a 100% cooperatively owned, democratically governed, community-driven organization dedicated to highlighting the best that people working together can create.
Please join us in that effort by contributing $25, $100, $500, or whatever you are able. Simply click here to make your contribution easily and securely online or bring a check to the store made out to Deep Roots Market.
On behalf of the Board of Directors & Staff of Deep Roots Market -
Cooperatively Yours,

Matt Davis, General Manager

When you’re asked to round up at the register, did you know that donation goes directly to our Low-Income Membership (LIMe) Program?
We're passionate about making healthy, quality food accessible to everyone in our community. That's why in 2018 we started the LIMe Program for shoppers who qualify for SNAP (EBT), Disability, WIC, or the Guilford County Orange Card.
The LIMe Program is directly funded by shoppers who round up their total at the register or who give a donation. When you donate or round up, every penny goes to funding the LIMe Program discount.
